Coming
from the Lower Ordovician Volhovian Level deposits near
Saint
Petersburg, Russia,
this is an example of the RARE Asaphid Pseudoasaphus tecticaudatus praecurrens.
It derives the species name from its similarity to genus Asaphus. It is a variety
of the species P. tecticaudatus, a similar trilobite with genal spines. Some
think that rather than having subspecvies status, this is really a sexually
dimorphic
form of tecticaudatus itself. The trilobite itself is 2.5 inches long (measured
in straight projection) and 1.5 inches wide at the widest extent of the cephalon.
Notice the wide terrace lines on the pygidium, a feature for which this taxon
is well known.
